Dale M. Schweitler Scholarship for Visually Impaired Students

  • The Dale M. Schweitler Scholarship for Visually Impaired Students was established in 1991 to provide a quality education for students at San Francisco State and San Jose State University to pursue professional careers in business, humanities, arts and sciences. After Mr. Schweitler’s death in 2001, California State University received a $4.8 million bequest from his estate to expand an existing financial aid program for students with visual impairments to all 23 CSU campuses.  Schweitler, himself blind, was a businessman in Mountain View, California.  Twenty-nine (43) scholarships of $10,000 each will be awarded for the academic year.

  Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants should be have a currently minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a CSU undergraduate or graduate student in 6.1 units or more in any major and must be enrolled in 6.1 units during the educational year in which the prize is get.
  • Applicants must have a visual impairment and provide certification from a medical health professional, including best-correct visual acuity indicators. (Please note that the disability must be such that it interferes with the educational process and requires accommodations, support services, or programs.)
  • Students who have previously been nominated and/or awarded a Schoettler Scholarship may continue to apply each year provided they continue to meet eligibility.

  Completed applications must include the following:

  A completed scholarship applicant information form

  Verification of Visual Impairment form, completed by a medical health professional

  • A brief personal statement describing the student’s background, personal accomplishments, challenges faced, educational attainment, and goals and aspirations for the future.
  • An application checklist (to be completed by DPRC and financial aid offices)
  • Do not leave any lines blank on the Applicant Information Form. If around there is no details to provide, “N/A” must be used.  Verification of visual impairment, which includes indicators of best-corrected visual acuity, also needs to be completed by your medical health professional.  Each item submitted with the application packet (i.e., “personal statement”) must be clearly labeled.
  • Completed applications must be submitted to the Disability Program and Resource Center according to the instructions on the Scholarship Fact Sheet and Application Checklist. Applications are receive on a year-round foundation, however, the analysis process has start and timely submission of application materials is guide.  No faxed submissions are accepted.
